Need a closet REALLY FAST? Make a simple closet with two bars to hang
clothes and an optional top shelf to hold more clothes or storage boxes.
All you need to make a simple closet is 4 - 8 heavy duty shelf and closet
pole support brackets and two extra long closet poles.
1. Measure the length of a solid wall that you desire to turn into
a fast simple closet. [Read the article on How to Conceal the
Simple Closet - Quick, Easy, & Cheap Solution]
2. Determine the number of heavy duty closet rod and shelf
support brackets that will be needed, as well as the number of
screws, washers, closet poles, end caps, and the length of
wood for the shelf (shelf is optional).
For the top bar of the closet, use 1 heavy duty closet rod and
shelf support brackets every 36 inches on center (this means
one bracket in the center of every 36 inches at the minimum).
2 screws and 2 washers will be needed for each heavy duty
closet rod and shelf support bracket installed.
Decide if you want your second pole to be just a pole across
the entire length of the wall or if you want the second pole to
take up only 1/2 or 1/4 of the wall.
If you want the pole to go straight across - do you want a shelf?
If yes, then use the same heavy duty closet rod and shelf
If you want just a pole - NO shelf - for the second pole, then
purchase the two closet pole ends that screw directly into the
wall and allow the pole to be slipped in easily.
If you want the second pole to go across 1/2 or 1/4 or a portion
of the wall - then use the heavy duty closet rod and shelf
support brackets for the desired length (36 inches on center
applies here too).
Measure the length of the wall shelves (optional) and buy the
wood for the shelf too.
2 end caps will be needed for each pole hung with the heavy
duty closet rod and shelf support brackets.
3. Purchase all needed supplies and tools from your local
home building store - like Lowes or Home Depot - on an
4. Use a stud finder or the old fashioned knock and listen to
find and mark the studs on your wall for installing the heavy
duty closet rod and shelf support brackets.
5. Use a drill to pre-drill a pilot hole into the studs where the
heavy duty closet rod and shelf support brackets will be
installed. This is VERY important, this will help prevent your
studs from being splitting or being damaged.
6. Screw heavy duty closet rod and shelf support brackets into
7. [Optional] Add the optional shelf to the heavy duty closet rod
and shelf support brackets. 2 to 3 small screws or nails will be
needs per bracket to install the shelf. Flat headed screws and
nuts will be needed for the following one person installation.
For a one person installation - place the wood shelf on the
brackets and mark the holes for the screws with a marker.
Remove the shelf and drill the holes. Place shelf back on the
heavy duty closet rod and shelf support brackets. Place flat
headed screws (top down) into the shelves and tighten with
nuts on the underside - this works well for a 1 person
installation and the shelf can be taken down easily and
re-installed at another location in the future.
8. Add the closet pole to the rod holder on the heavy duty
closet rod and shelf support brackets. Add the end caps to the
closet rod. The top [optional] shelf and rod is complete.
9. Repeat the steps for installing a second set of heavy duty
closet rod and shelf support brackets - whether for a full wall,
1/2 wall, 1/4 wall installation.
If installing a second pole across the wall. Install a closet
flange set. Then slide the second pole in place. Consider
adding a few simple supports across the wall for additional
support - they can by the heavy duty closet rod and shelf
supports or a lighter version.
